- Transfer account ownership to an admin
Transfer account ownership to an admin
Hand the single Owner role to an existing admin on your account, including who can do it and what changes after the swap.
Goal
Move the Owner role from yourself to another person on your account. Every account has exactly one Owner, so this is a swap: the admin you choose becomes the Owner, and you become an Admin in the same action. The Owner is the only role that controls billing, can transfer ownership, and can delete the account, so all three move with the role.
When to transfer ownership
Transfer ownership when:
- You are leaving the account or handing off day-to-day control and want billing and account-deletion rights to move with the new person.
- You need to delete your own user account. A user who still owns an account cannot be deleted; you must transfer ownership first.
You do not need to transfer ownership to let someone else build workflows, invite teammates, manage workspaces, or manage branding. An Admin already has all of those abilities. The only things reserved for the Owner are billing, transferring ownership, and deleting the account.
Before you start
Confirm both of the following, or the transfer will be rejected:
- You are the current Owner. Only the Owner can start a transfer. Admins and Members do not see the transfer action.
- The person you are transferring to is already an Admin (
account-admin) on this account. You cannot transfer ownership to a Member or to someone who is not on the account. A teammate's role is set when you invite them, so if the person you want as Owner is not already an Admin, invite them as an Admin from the Team page.
After you transfer, you become an Admin. You cannot undo the transfer yourself. Only the new Owner can transfer ownership back to you. Plan the handoff before you confirm.
Transfer ownership
Open the Team page
Go to Team in your account navigation. This is where every teammate on the account is listed, along with their account role.
Find the admin who will become Owner
Locate the teammate in the Teammates list. They must already show the Admin role — the Transfer ownership action only appears on admin rows. Members are not eligible; if the person is not yet an Admin, invite them as an Admin from the Team page.
Start the transfer
Open the row actions for that teammate and choose Transfer ownership. A confirmation dialog appears titled "Transfer ownership to {name}?" with the message: "{name} becomes the account owner. You become an admin and can't undo this, only the new owner can transfer it back. Billing access moves to the new owner."
Confirm
Select Transfer ownership in the dialog to confirm. While the swap runs, the button shows "Transferring...". On success you see the toast "Ownership transferred".
The swap is atomic. In a single step, the chosen admin is promoted to Owner (account-owner) and you are demoted to Admin (account-admin). The account always has exactly one Owner before and after.
What changes after the transfer
| Capability | You (now Admin) | New Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Build workflows, connections, and resources | yes | yes |
| Invite teammates and clients | yes | yes |
| Create, rename, and delete workspaces | yes | yes |
| Manage branding | yes | yes |
| Manage billing, payment, and plan | no | yes |
| Transfer ownership | no | yes |
| Delete the account | no | yes |
Your session is refreshed immediately when the transfer completes, so your reduced permissions take effect right away without signing out and back in.
Billing moves with ownership. The new Owner gains access to the subscription, payment method, and plan. Note that the Account owner email field in account settings is a separate contact address for billing receipts and security alerts; it does not change automatically when you transfer ownership. Update it under account settings if the contact should change too.
Verify it worked
Open the Team page again and confirm the role labels have swapped: the person you transferred to now shows Owner, and you now show Admin. As an Admin, you will no longer see the Transfer ownership action on any teammate row, and billing controls will no longer be available to you.
Troubleshooting
"Only the account owner can transfer ownership" (403) You are not the current Owner. Only the Owner can start a transfer. If you believe you should be the Owner, ask the current Owner to transfer to you.
"Target must be an account-admin on this tenant" (400) The person you selected is a Member, not an Admin. Change their account role to Admin first, then start the transfer again.
"You are already the account owner" (400) You tried to transfer ownership to yourself. Choose a different teammate.
Too many attempts Transfers are rate-limited to 3 attempts per 15 minutes per user. Wait for the window to reset, then try again.
"AccountOwnerRequiredError" (409) The transfer could not confirm exactly one Owner and was rolled back, so nothing changed. Reload the Team page to check current roles, then retry. If it keeps failing, contact support.
